Some unlikely students, such as 63-year-old Florence Smith, are learning how to change flat tires at Fort Bragg. The military widow is taking part in an auto skills class with other military spouses on post.
Other than keeping their cars clean, many women don't know much about car maintenance. This class is geared to change that.
Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation spokesperson Katy Norton says military spouses need these skills perhaps more than the public at large.
Even if these students decide to leave it to the professionals, organizers hope this new found knowledge will prevent them from being taken advantage of by unscrupulous mechanics.

The classes are being held to let military families know about two self-service auto shops on post. Officials say several men have also expressed interest in the automotive classes.
