CLINTON, N.C. — Trashy yards could lead to big fines for Sampson County residents after the Board of Commissioners passed a public nuisance ordinance.

Property owners in unincorporated areas of the county whose lots contain trash, industrial waste or junked vehicles will face a $100 fine for a first offense. A second violation will result in a $200 fine, and subsequent offenses could lead to $500 fines or 30 days in jail.

The ordinance takes effect March 31, and property owners will get a warning before citations are issued, officials said.
