RALEIGH, N.C. — Traffic was backed up for miles Friday afternoon and evening after a truck pulling a trailer jackknifed and spilled fuel on Interstate 40.

The wreck shut down both westbound lanes on I-40 near Cary Towne Boulevard, which is just west of the US 1/64 interchange. The wreck happened at 4:30 p.m. and traffic was backed up for several miles -- all the way to South Saunders Street -- for at least two hours.

The traffic tie-ups weren't limited to I-40 -- there were reports that cars were turning off I-40 on various exits, causing delays on side streets that normally were clear, such as Tryon Road.

Motorists were told get off I-40 west and use I-440 Inner Beltline to Wade Avenue west to detour around the site, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.
