Rain was forecast to taper off Thursday evening, but the weather system could produce some dense fog and black ice on roadways for the area Friday morning, especially north and west of Raleigh as temperatures drop to or just below freezing.
Conditions were expected to improve by 9 a.m., clearing up for the rest of Friday with sunshine and temperatures in the low 50s.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported 62 collisions in the Triangle area Thursday, with most of the worst accidents occurring during the Thursday morning commute in the Research Triangle Park area.
There were reports of multiple accidents on parts of Interstate 540 in Raleigh and Interstate 85 in Durham. Crews said some of the accidents occurred near bridges and overpasses where icy spots had formed.
"(The roads) were really, really slick, just like glass," said James Caddell, whose car was involved in a fender-bender with a sport utility vehicle.
"He'd already spun out in the road and I plowed right into him. I could not avoid it," he said.
Durham police reported 35 traffic accidents. Numbers from other law enforcement agencies in the area were not immediately available.
There were no fatalities reported in the Triangle.
Another storm system could bring winter precipitation into the Triangle area Sunday, WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said, but it was too early to determine just what kind of effect, if any, it would have on the area.
