Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A woman is dead and a suspect is in custody after a shooting at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Fayetteville.

Fayetteville police dispatch got a call at about 8 p.m. Monday from a hospital operator about an irate person in the hospital pharmacy. Police say Arthur James Charland Jr. shot a woman at the hospital. The woman has not yet been identified.

Police say Charland was a pharmacy technician at the hospital and that the woman also worked there.

Federal agents say the woman was shot three or four times with a shotgun.

There has not been any word about a possible motive for the shooting.

Charland, 42, of Skycliff Court, Fayetteville was charged with murder. He is being held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center. He has been appointed a lawyer and his next appearance will be in federal court in Raleigh.

A representative with the hospital said he wants to reassure veterans and the public that the hospital will stay open. Hospital officials met with staff Tuesday to discuss the incident.
