Two Tractor-Trailers Involved In Vance County Accident

Posted Updated

HENDERSON, N.C. — Authorities say a driver fell asleep at the wheel while driving an UPS tractor-trailer on Interstate 85. Another driver could not stop in time and found himself in an accident.

The accident occurred around 3:45 a.m. Friday at mile marker 217 near Henderson. Authorities say the man was driving southbound on I-85 when he fell asleep and hit the guardrail. When he woke up, he overcorrected and the tractor-trailer overturned on its side.

Another tractor-trailer heading southbound saw the accident, but he could not stop in time. Quincy Ellis' tractor-trailer crashed into the back of the first tractor-trailer. He said the wet roads and the diesel that spilled from the first rig made it slick and tough to stop.

Both drivers were not injured. The driver of the first tractor-trailer was charged with reckless driving.

Traffic was backed up as crews worked to clear the accident, but traffic is flowing again.
