On Dec. 1, authorities received a call about an alleged assault. According to investigators, the suspect had a red van with one working tail light. When they found the van, they saw that the driver, 37-year-old Robert Doyle Lefler, had blood on his hands and clothing.
Lefler, a former Pinehurst police officer and an enforcement officer for the state Division of Motor Vehicles, was arrested on the scene for suspicion of driving while impaired.
The alleged assault victim, Anthony Wilbert Caviness, 45, of Robbins, was taken to the hospital.
During the course of the investigation, authorities learned that someone had vandalized three vehicles belonging to the narcotics unit of the Sheriff's Office. Investigators learned that Lefler and Caviness were responsible for the vandalism.
Detectives charged Lefler with assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill inflicting serious injury and three counts of injury to personal property.
Lefler also faces burglary and larcery charges in connection with a home break-in. Authorities said stolen property was discovered in Lefler's home. Detectives were also able to gain enough information to solve break-ins located in Chatham, Robeson, Moore and Bladen counties.
Lefler was placed in the Moore County Jail. Charges are pending against Caviness.
