DURHAM, N.C. — A man who claimed to be armed with a gun while barricaded inside a bathroom at a Durham health clinic surrendered to police Saturday after a standoff that lasted about 2½ hours, authorities said.

Kammie Michael, a spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department, said police were called to Lincoln Community Health Center, which is located at

1301 Fayetteville St.

, at about 11:30 a.m. after an employee reported that a man locked himself in a bathroom and was screaming and threatening people.

"He was like, 'Call the police. I'm going to kill up everybody in the place,' and kill himself and he wasn't going to open the door until police arrived," said Tammie Lindsay, a lab technician at the clinic.

Officers arrived at the scene and evacuated the facility. Then, police negotiators and members of the Selection Enforcement Team entered the building and stayed in contact with the man until he surrendered at about 2:10 p.m.

"We're told he came here earlier this morning asking for narcotics," Michael said Saturday. "When they refused to give him any, that's when he went into the bathroom."

Officers did not find a gun on the man, though he damaged the bathroom, Michael said.

The man, whose identity was not known as of Saturday afternoon, was taken for a psychological evaluation, Michael said.
