Car Fire On I-40 Brings Traffic To Standstill

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Police said a minor fender bender shut down a stretch of Interstate 40 in Durham County for more than an hour on Saturday.

At about 11 a.m. Saturday, a fire erupted inside a car after it was involved in a minor fender on eastbound I-40, near the I-540 interchange.

Several motorists with fire extinguishers stopped to help, but the fire got worse and traffic on I-40 came to a standstill for several miles.

The eastbound lanes were shut down for more than an hour as firefighters extinguished the fire and emergency crews cleaned up the debris.

Several people involved in the accident were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Police said because of the traffic backup, which extended to the Davis Drive exit, there were several additional minor accidents. But, no serious injuries have been reported.
