At Monday's town council meeting, residents got a rundown on their choices. They can either sell their homes or stay and rebuild on higher ground.
The council decided to apply for federal financial assistance fromFEMA. The money will be used to either buy out families or elevate their homes.
"I've been living here for 46 years. I've seen many floods here, but I would just love to sell or whatever the case may be because I'm tired," said resident Allie Williams.
More federal inspectors are scheduled to be in Tarboro within the next two weeks. A FEMA spokesperson says the federal government wants to complete the Tarboro project within six months.
In the meantime, FEMA officials are asking people to be patient.
FEMA workers are taking in about 10,000 requests a day for help, making it impossible to get to everyone immediately.
They try to get money to flood victims within seven to 10 days, but that is not always possible.
