Police said Thursday night they were treating the death as a homicide. Authorities said they were called to the Exxon station at
1204 NE Maynard Road
at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The manager of the convenience store said there was some kind of odor outside of the store earlier in the week, but he thought it was just garbage in the Dumpster. When his garbage was picked up Tuesday, he said the smell still lingered outside.
When the convenience store manager went out to investigate Thursday, he found a man's body lying facedown in the woods near the store.
"At this point, we believe that the man did not die from natural causes, so we're treating it as a homicide as a matter of standard procedure," Captain Dave Wulff said.
Authorities say the body was partly decomposed and there was no identification on him. The store manager said the man was wearing a long-sleeve shirt, jeans and work boots.
Authorities do not know if the man died where he was found or if his body was moved after his death. His body will be taken to the N.C. Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
