No Charges Filed Yet In Friday's 72-Vehicle Pileup

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Investigators said Saturday that they would wait on filing charges in a series of accidents that happened along Interstates 40 and 85 Friday afternoon near Burlington.

A spokesman for the N.C. Highway Patrol said that because 72 vehicles were involved in the accidents that investigators would wait to see if Alamance County's district attorney wanted to pursue charges.

The series of accidents was a result of one minor accident between two vehicles, authorities said. The sudden slowdown as a result caused a 34-vehicle pileup, which then led to a domino effect of other smaller crashes.

At one point, traffic was backed up more than five miles and delays lasted several hours.

While no one was seriously hurt, the Highway Patrol said 12 people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
