UNC Leaders Discuss Ways To Raise Money Without Raising Tuition

University system leaders want to come up with a formula fair to students while funding the university's growing financial needs.

"This is a compelling important problem and I do not believe that tuition is the only solution or the best solution to this important problem," said UNC System President Molly Broad.

"We want to ensure that all UNC campuses remain affordable to North Carolina residents, that our campuses, particularily our research campuses, have the managerial flexibility and latitude they need to respond to salary concerns and other competitive pressures," said Charles Mercer, of the Tuition Policy Task Force.

The state budget passed by the Senate allowed The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and N.C. State in Raleigh to raise tuition rates, but that provision was later dropped.
