Durham police said Timothy McDonald, 40, of Hadrian Drive, shot Cynthia Greene, 34, several times in the parking lot in front of Kingdom Baptist Church at
1910 Sedwick Road
and then fled with his 7-year-old son.
A few minutes after the shooting, a police officer followed McDonald to the parking lot of
Asbury Temple United Methodist Church
on Alston Avenue where investigators said McDonald sat his son on his lap, pulled out a gun and threatened to kill himself.
Police said McDonald released his son, who was not injured, and surrendered after about 90 minutes.
Greene was taken to Duke University Hospital where she had surgery Sunday afternoon. Her condition was not known.
McDonald was arrested on several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault on a female, and misdemeanor child abuse. He was not charged with kidnapping.
