State to Kick Off Child Passenger Safety Week
A major campaign to keep your kids safe kicks off on Monday. The state is urging parents to remember to protect child passengers.
Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — Child safety is the focus of a major campaign that is about to begin in North Carolina. The goal of the campaign is to keep young passengers safe.
In 2005, 100 kids were either seriously hurt or killed in crashes in North Carolina. At least 27 of them were not in a car seat, which is why Gov. Mike Easley is urging drivers to protect child passengers.
North Carolina law requires children younger than 8 years old or less than 80 pounds be properly fastened in a car seat or booster seat.
State leaders are also highlighting other dangers involving children and vehicles like back-over accidents. Every year, thousands of children are hurt or killed because drivers do not see them while backing up. Statistics also show that their parents are behind the wheel.
Next week during National Child Passenger Safety Week, there will be clinics and demonstrations statewide talking about topics such as back-over accidents and car seat safety.
