RALEIGH, N.C. — A 14-year-old female is in serious condition after she was shot while riding in the backseat of a car in North Raleigh on Friday night, police said.

Witnesses said a car full of teenagers got into a shouting match with a man outside his North Raleigh house. Then the man got into a car, chased after the teenagers and opened fire.

Police said the girl was shot twice at about 10:30 p.m. Friday on Great Laurel Drive. The name of the girl has not been released.

Police have arrested 37-year-old William Edwards and charged him with four counts of attempted murder.

Edwards lived in a house near Great Laurel Drive, police said.

Neighbors said Edwards and the carload of teenagers were arguing over a football game before the shootings.

"I think these kids got involved in something they weren't expecting, and this is the end result," neighbor Ralph Barone said.

This is not the first time Edwards has been accused of shooting somebody.

Back in 1989, the Greensboro Police Department charged him with first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty, and he was found not guilty.

Court papers also show Edwards was accused of shooting a gun into occupied property in 1990. Those charges were dismissed.

Edwards is expected to make his first court appearance on these latest charges on Monday.

"You know, if they ask me to be on the jury, I'd do it," said John Robinson, a volunteer firefighter who ran from his house and pulled the 14-year-old girl out of the car. "That's a 14-year old girl. She's got her whole life ahead of her."

Neighbors said the cul-de-sac where Edwards lived has had troubles with teenagers causing problems, but it was unclear if there was a history with the teens he has been accused of shooting at.

Edwards is being held in the Wake County Jail under a $1 million bond.
