Five Injured in Durham Wreck

Five people were injured in a head-on collision Sunday morning in Durham.

The accident happened about 12:30 a.m. when a northbound 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Jeffrey Gideon Sanders, 33, of Clubhaven Place in Raleigh crossed the center line on Miami Boulevard between East End Avenue and the U.S. 70 split, police said.

The truck collided with a southbound 2005 Buick driven by Delbert Eugene Watson, 51, of Green Street. Investigators said Sanders apparently swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid traffic that had stopped in front of him.

Watson and his wife, Lorrine, 48, were trapped in their vehicle and extricated by firefighters. The Watsons were taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

Two passengers in the back seat of Watson’s car -- Danielle Watson, 16, and Nakia Grace, 27 – suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to Durham Regional Hospital for treatment. Sanders was taken to Durham Regional Hospital for treatment of leg and head injuries.

Investigators said alcohol and excessive speed weren’t factors in the accident. No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
