RALEIGH, N.C. — Parents and doctors are looking closely at one provision in the state's budget agreement that mandates eye exams for all kindergartners in public schools.
Gov. Mike Easley and House Speaker Jim Black, who is an optometrist in Charlotte, support the change.
The measure requires eye exams for children before they enter kindergarten, which means added costs to parents.
The measure would set aside millions of dollars to cover the costs for children who are not insured.
