Tax-Free Weekend Lures Shoppers Across State

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The sales tax-free weekend has shoppers across North Carolina getting ready to buy school supplies free from the state's seven-percent rate.

It will be the fourth year that North Carolina has held the tax-free sales weekend, which runs Friday through Sunday.

Under the exemption, sales tax is not charged on school supplies, certain clothing and footwear, some sporting equipment and computers.

Officials say the tax holiday has saved shoppers more than $24 million since the first one was held in 2002. Savings this weekend are estimated at more than $8 million.

Some merchants have hired extra staff to handle expected crowds.
