DURHAM, N.C. — An attorney known for helping convict Durham novelist Mike Peterson of murder wants to be the next district attorney of Durham County.

"I've been thinking about this for a number of weeks since my resignation from the D.A.'s office and I just decided it's the right thing to do," former Assistant District Attorney Freda Black said Friday in an announcement in front of family and friends.

Black will run against Mike Nifong, with whom she worked for more than a decade at the District Attorney's Office.

When Nifong took over as district attorney earlier this year, he asked Black to resign.

Black refuses to talk about what happened, but insists that she will run a clean campaign.

The election is next year.
