Hearings Scheduled In Hopes Of Resolving State Superintendent's Race

The group of 10 lawmakers will hold two days of hearings on the unresolved state superintendent's race.

During the hearings, Fletcher's attorneys will argue 11,000 ballots cast in the wrong precinct should not count. Atkinson's attorneys will counter said that she won the race by 8,500 votes. After the hearings, committee members will decide who is right.

"We'll deliberate as a committee, make a recommendation to the General Assembly and then I would expect the General Assembly to act quickly on that recommendation," said Sen. Dan Clodfelter, D-Mecklenburg County.

Committee chairs said the state could have a new superintendent of public instruction by the summer's end.
