Officers responded to a family disturbance at 1218-C Sedgefield St. at 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday. When they arrived, an armed man identified as 58-year-old George Amos confronted the officers. Amos then went inside the house and refused to come out.
Amos' brother, who was inside the house when officers arrived, left the house without incident.
Police Department hostage negotiators spoke with Amos several times, but he still refused to come out of the house. The Police Department's Selective Enforcement Team used tear gas and made a forced entry into the house shortly before 11 p.m.
As officers made entry, they discovered a fire inside the house. The fire damaged a sofa, chairs and some papers. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Department. Officers also recovered four firearms at the scene.
Several homes were evacuated during the standoff.
Amos, whose family said has a history of drug problems, was taken to Duke University Hospital for medical and psychological evaluation. He was later released into the custody of Durham police and taken to Durham County Jail. Amos was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on an emergency official and resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer. His bond was set at $35,000.
