Man Held Up Inside House Seized By S.W.A.T. Team

CARY, N.C. — Cary authorities said a man who threatened to kill himself and to set his house on fire was seized by a S.W.A.T. team Tuesday evening after emergency workers had tried to negotiate with him.

Authorities said police tried to serve the man, whose identity has not been released, commitment papers earlier Tuesday, but he refused them and isolated himself inside a house on Hamilton Hedge Place in Cary.

During the standoff, police were unsure if the man actually had any weapons and did not say whether he had any when the S.W.A.T. team went into the house.

Although they said no one was in danger, police also evacuated the neighbors on both sides of the house as a precaution. They were allowed to return shortly after the standoff ended.

Authorities said Wednesday that the man will not be charged.
