CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities said Friday that a man currently behind bars, accused of stealing diamonds from a jewelry store, hid one of the gems by swallowing it.

Randal Jennings Collins Hall, 31, of Four Oaks, was charged on May 31 with the larceny of two diamonds worth $30,000 from Hinkamp Jewelers on McPherson Church Road.

Detectives said Hall swallowed one of the diamonds and stashed the other in the woods.

Jailers said Hall eventually passed the diamond and hid it in a salt wrapper in the cell next to his. Authorities discovered it on Thursday.

Officers are still looking for the diamond in the woods. As for the recovered diamond, David Hinkamp, the jewelry store's owner, said it would eventually be sent back to the manufacturer after officers release it.

Hall is currently in jail on $20,000 bond.
