It is called The Place, and this summer, it is the place to be for teenagers in Knightdale.
For teenagers like 14-year-old Damontae Tapp, The Place offers an alternative to summer boredom, which Damontae admits can lead to trouble.
The youth center opened just three weeks after the town of Knightdale passed a 9 p.m. curfew to help put a stop to a rise in gang activity.
Parks and Recreation director Tina Cheek says the turnout is better than expected.
"We have about 50 kids coming through here every day," Cheek said.
And when the teens are not playing, they are actually learning. They go on field trips and the town brings in speakers from the police and fire departments.
The town of Knightdale put up about $3,000 for the center. The rest came from donations from developers and businesses.
When school starts in the fall, the center will offer after-school tutoring.
