Thirty-year-old Cornelius Shaw was taken into custody at his grandmother's house after a sheriff's deputy spotted marijuana growing in the backyard of her house on Fawn Court, deputies said.
Cumberland County Sheriff Deputy Lt. Tom Zilg was off duty at the time he discovered the marijuana.
Zilg was shopping at a yard sale in LaGrange Subdivision at around 3 p.m.
He said he happened to look over into the backyard of a next-door neighbor and spotted the marijuana plants.
Investigators sealed off the neighborhood and confiscated 25 plants from the backyard.
The plants have a street value of about $25,000, deputies said.
Shaw has been charged with one felony count of manufacturing marijuana. He was released from the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $3,000 unsecured bond.
Investigators said Shaw's grandmother was not involved in growing the marijuana plants. Shaw told his grandmother that he was growing tomato plants.
