Fayetteville Realtor Shot On Sales Call Tells Story From Hospital Bed

Last Thursday, ReMAX realtor Kathleen Yaggi headed to Hoke County for what she thought was a sales call. When she got to a mobile home on Glenlea Drive in Raeford, Yaggi said 21-year-old June McCoy got in the car with her -- and for the first 20 seconds everything seemed fine.

"(He was) very pleasant," Yaggi said. 'Hi, how are you?' 'Fine.' 'Good, let's go.'"

But before they could even pull out of McCoy's driveway, Yaggi said he asked her to drive around back.

"He insisted, and I said no," Yaggi said. "I never saw a gun, so I wasn't afraid."

Investigators said that is when McCoy shot her three times at close range from the front seat.

"I thought he tased me," Yaggi said. "I didn't know I was shot at the time."

Yaggi, just 5 feet tall and 100 pounds, then got out of the car and managed to call 911 from her cellular phone.

Police said McCoy, who is bipolar, then barricaded himself inside the mobile home and at some point shot himself in the head. He survived, and in the hours after the shooting, Yaggi let her husband know she would, too.

She scribbled a note for him that read, "Just too damn stubborn to die." She also jotted down requests to get appraisals and inspections done for her clients.

Yaggi, who still has two bullets lodged inside her, remained in intensive care at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center until she was moved on Monday.

"There's no reason for someone to take three medium caliber in the rib cage and be alive," said Yaggi. "Wow. Thank God."

Less than a week after the attack, she said she wants to get back to work. That may be a while, though, because doctors said they do not know when Yaggi will be released.

"I don't believe this will ever happen again, but I will be more careful," Yaggi said. "Life goes on and so, as soon as I can, I will."

Because she works on commission and will be without a salary for a while, Fayetteville realtors plan to hold a yard sale this weekend to raise money for Yaggi.

The yard sale will be at Keller Williams Real Estate Office, 2800 Breezewood Ave. in Fayetteville from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m. until noon Saturday.

Investigators said McCoy is now paralyzed from his self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He also remains at Cape Fear Valley.
