An Orange County animal control officer found 66 dogs living in one house in Chapel Hill last weekend. Authorities said the dogs' owners, Kenneth and Robbin Wiseman, had good intentions in caring for the dogs but became overwhelmed.
The Wisemans each face 47 counts of cruelty to animals and one count of operating a kennel without a license.
Veterinary evaluations of each animal showed 47 of the 66 surrendered dogs were severely malnourished with numerous health problems, Orange County Animal Control said in a statement Tuesday.
Investigators said they found the animals living in unclean living conditions and that many of them appeared to be undernourished and suffering from visible skin lesions.
Most of the animals have been placed in rescue groups or foster homes. Some had to be euthanized.
The Wisemans are scheduled to appear in court July 21.
