RALEIGH, N.C. — A big dig began in downtown Raleigh Monday as crews started major excavation work for the city's new convention center.
More than 32,000 truckloads of dirt will be removed from the site and taken to the Dorothea Dix campus. In some places, crews could dig down to 47 feet. At any given time, 15 to 20 trucks will be making the round-trip.
Builders said the 500,000-square-foot convention center plan leaders chose is the most risky because it goes so far underground.
The excavation is scheduled to be complete in December. The new convention center is scheduled to open in about three years.
