Police say one person died and six were sent to the hospital, including three children, near the intersection of Stadium Drive and Carver Street. Authorities have identified the fatality as 19-year-old Angela Nedady. A passenger in her car, 32-year-old Nadia Badrawane, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries.
Authorities say Nedady ran the stop sign, crashing into another vehicle. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident. No charges were filed.
Hours later as police were cleaning up that wreck, another car approached the scene and hit another car and fled the area. The car later crashed into the living room of an apartment.
"I ran to the lady's rescue and I saw a man come out of the car and just book," witness Jerrod Nolan said.
The woman who lived in the apartment was home at the time, but fortunately she was in her bedroom. Authorities say they believe they know the identity of the driver who fled the scene. That person may face hit-and-run and property damage charges.
Another deadly accident took place late Monday night at the intersection of N. Duke Street and W. Markham Avenue.
Police say Jesus Hernandez was driving his vehicle when he crashed into a tree, then fled on foot, leaving a passenger still inside. Authorities say that passenger died a short time later at Duke University Hospital.
Authorities say a police dog tracked down Hernandez a block away. Hernandez, who was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
