N.C. State Hosts Hurricane Forecasting Forum

RALEIGH, N.C. — On the first day of the 2005 hurricane season, N.C. State hosted a hurricane forecasting forum featuring local, state and national weather officials, hurricane researchers and emergency management officials, including the director of the National Weather Service.

Rep. Bob Etheridge and the panelists discussed technology and research on hurricane forecasting, especially relating to inland flooding and new warning systems to help save lives and communities. The forum, titled "Hurricanes: Forecasting to Save Lives," was held Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center of the N.C. State University College of Textiles on Centennial Campus in Raleigh.

Scheduled panelists include: General David Johnson, Director of the National Weather Service Bryan Beatty, Secretary of N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety Peter Gabrielsen, Chief of Hydrologic Services, National Weather Service, Eastern Region David Herlong, Program Manger, N.C. Flood Warning System Dr. Len Pietrafesa, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, N.C. State University Dr. Lian Xie, N.C. State University Shaowu Bao, N.C. State University Gary Stephenson, Chief Meteorologist, News 14 Elizabeth Gardner, Meteorologist, WRAL Janice Jones, Chief Meteorologist, WNCN Joanne Feldman, Meteorologist, WTVD

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted this will be another above-normal hurricane season. NOAA predicts that this season there will be between seven and nine hurricanes of which as many as five could become major hurricanes.
