State Troopers Taking Extra Steps This Holiday Weekend

Posted Updated

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — Highway patrol officers are taking extra steps to keep the roads safe this Memorial Day weekend.

They're conducting Operation Days of Summer.

Their goal is to catch people who are speeding, following too closely or driving erratically.

Troopers said they are paying special attention to truckers.

"We'll say that ninety-five percent of the truckers are out there doing what they're supposed to do," Lt. Everett Clendenin of the N.C. Highway Patrol said. "But there's still some who take chances when they're traveling. They'll take chances or push the elements."

Troopers said they're hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's Memorial Day weekend, when a series of crashes shut down I-95 in Johnston County.

Last year, 21 people in North Carolina also died in crashes over the holiday weekend.
