Inmate Escapes From Granville Correctional Center

GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. — An escaped convict is back behind bars after he escaped from a correctional facility early Monday morning.

A spokesman for the North Carolina Department of Corrections said Gregory Gentry escaped from Umstead Correctional Facility, where he was serving a 23-month sentence for larceny.

He left the facility about 4:20 a.m. and went to Umstead Hospital, where he allegedly stole keys to a state truck and then headed to Person County.

While in Person County, the spokesman said, Gentry robbed a woman and fled on foot before the Person County Sheriff's Department apprehended him.

Gentry will be charged with common law robbery by Person County. He will also be charged with breaking and entering and larceny of a state vehicle, as well as a felony of escaping prison.

Currently in the Person County Jail, Gentry will be taken to Nash Correctional Facility.
