CLINTON, N.C. — The former Register of Deeds in Sampson County will not spend any time in jail for embezzlement.

Mae Hargrove Troublefied, 85, of Faison, was convicted of taking more than $4,000 from the Register of Deeds office over a two-year period.

Troublefield resigned in October after the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation began looking into the case.

A judge sentenced Troublefield to a suspended sentence of 13 to 16 months and ordered her to repay the money.

Troublefield resigned last fall after 28 years in office.
