Raleigh Lakes Closed While Crews Clean Sewage Spill

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Two Raleigh lakes are off-limits as researchers conduct water safety tests.

Sycamore Lake and Big Lake at Umstead State Park are closed as crews clean up the city's biggest sewage spill in years.

Crews are pumping out sludge and spraying fresh water in a three-mile stretch of Sycamore Creek.

The sewage poured from a manhole for more than a month before anyone noticed.

City officials blame a contractor, but say they do not know which one.
