Originally, the town had planned to build a no-leash dog park in North Cary Park. But several people who lived near the park opposed the plan.
They said the dogs would come too close to a playground, and they were concerned about the safety of children.
Just as the debate was heating up, developers for Lowe's Home Improvement mistakenly cut down too many trees when they were building a new store off of Maynard Road.
The land happens to be near Godbold Park and at a safe distance from the park's playground.
Cary officials have since approved spending $50,000 to build the dog park at Godbold.
To offset that cost, the town will charge fees for users of the park.
Cary residents may pay $40 for a yearly membership, or $5 per visit.
Town leaders expect the park to be opened in August.
