Sheriff Says Jailers Will Be Disciplined For Mistakenly Releasing Prisoner
Posted — UpdatedSherriff "Moose" Butler said Tuesday that he and his staff are ultimately responsible for the release of Deanna Posey, 27, who had 17 days left in her jail sentence. Posey was back behind bars Tuesday afternoon.
Butler blames the mix-up on two clerical mistakes. He said the main problem was that Sealy used a number of different names, and that made it difficult for jailers to check her entire court record.
"When they book them in at the jail under a name, and later they book them in under another name, I don't know, I think it ties to the whole criminal justice system," Butler said.
"I'm not defending making mistakes or making errors, but it happens," he said. "And all I know is that you have to admit it, deal with it, and move on. And that's all we're going to do."
Posey was supposed to serve 30 days in jail for selling cocaine from her house. Lesser drug charges were dropped, but those appeared under her married name-- Deanna Sealy. According to the sheriff's office, that led to her mistaken release.
The jail is not releasing any information on how or when Posey was brought back into custody. She will not face any additional charges.
