Outdoor Space Among Options Considered For North Wake Landfill

RALEIGH, N.C. — One person's trash could soon be another person's treasure. Lots of groups hope to turn the North Wake Landfill into great outdoor space when it closes in 2007.

A committee is now considering all the options. Some ideas include walking trails, a dog park, athletic fields or even a new school.

County commissioners will consider that recommendation along with the results of a new master plan to determine what should go on the property.

Each year, Wake County generates 1.3 tons of trash per person, but it does not compare to some other places. The per capita trash rate in Dare and Edgecombe counties is almost a ton more than Wake. However, Dare County's numbers are impacted by summer travelers who do not live there.

Mecklenburg and Wilson counties are tied for third on the list for most trash generated per person.
