New Left-Turn Traffic Lights Planned For Triangle

The new light includes a flashing yellow arrow, never seen before in the Triangle.

The arrow would replace the solid green light at intersections where drivers turn across oncoming traffic. It would warn drivers to proceed with caution.

Engineers say too many drivers automatically think green means go, even if they don't have the right of way.

The first light will be on New Bern Avenue at the main visitor's entrance to WakeMed Hospital.

"We feel like people may use more caution and use a little more care before they proceed out into the intersection and make that left turn," said Greg Fuller, a N.C. DOT signals engineer.

The DOT hopes to save money with the new lights by eliminating "Left Turn Yield" signs.
