Durham Accident Kills One, Leaves Another In Critical Condition

Posted Updated

DURHAM COUNTY — Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a deadly accident in Durham County Saturday afternoon. A grandmother is dead and her 6-year-old grandchild is in the hospital after a collision with a suspected drunk driver, officials said.

The situation began at a convenience store where witnesses say Kenneth Maready stole a car from the parking lot. When officers pulled over Maready along Stallings Road, they say he sped away. The Highway Patrol says Maready collided with two other vehicles. The driver and passenger inside a red truck, Kay Parrott-Stokes and her grandchild, were thrown from the vehicle. Stokes died on the scene.

A passenger inside Maready's vehicle, Ronald Jones, was taken to Duke University Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Kenneth Maready is charged with second degree murder and larceny of a vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.

Part of Stallings Road was closed for much of the day Saturday following the accident.
