GARNER, N.C. — Crusty snow and a lot of ice are what people have to deal with on secondary roads after Sunday's snow.

For dozens of people in Garner, just getting off the side roads was an uphill battle.

On Old Stage Road drivers were wiping out and sliding around.

With all the ice, Sunday's snow became Monday's menace. No one could drive up the hill on Old Stage Road

That is until Chris Richards gave them a lift. Richards hooked up a large chain to cars and used his 4-wheel-drive truck to haul other cars up the hill.

"It's Christmas -- just helping people out, that's all," said Richards, 30.

One by one, Richards got cars and trucks going again.

Richards called his boss and told him what he was doing and that he might be late for work. His boss told him to keep on plugging away.

Theresa Garrison was trying to get to work, but was stuck trying to get up the hill.

"I'm not used to driving in this, so I'm not sure what to do," Garrison said.

She didn't have to do much -- just steer -- as Richards towed her up the hill.

"He's nice, he must be from Garner because there are nice people in Garner."

But Richards isn't even from the South.

"I'm originally from New York, it's not true what they say about Yankees!" Richards said.
