At least three flights were cancelled because of bad weather elsewhere Thursday morning. Two were to midwest cities of Cleveland and Cincinnati on Continental and Delta airlines, respectively. A Delta flight to New York's LaGuardia airport was also cancelled from RDU.
Delays of up to 90 minutes were reported for other flights with connections involving such cities as Atlanta, Indianapolis, Orlando and Nashville. Most delays are between 15 and 45 minutes, but a few have been 90 minutes.
Cindy Harrington's foster daughter had to fly through Atlanta. Harrington said this Christmas is extra special for her.
"She's in the Air Force. She's probably going back overseas, so this is the last time we'll see her for a while, so 30 minutes is no big deal."
Long lines are reported at ticket counters, with some travelers reporting it took an hour to reach the counter. Mindy Hamlin, RDU spokesperson, said officials expect 32,000 people to travel through the airport on Thursday.
Airport officials reminded travelers to call ahead to airlines to check on the status of flights and to arrive at the airport about two hours before their flight. They also reminded travelers to not wrap Christmas presents because of security precautions.
