Bitterly cold weather is expected in the area starting late on Sunday, and a system involving some moisture is expected to develop off the coast.
The combination could bring flurries or light snow to central North Carolina Sunday night and Monday morning, but little or no accumulation.
There could be measurable snowfall in the mountains. Forecasters say there could be some accumulation of snow in the far eastern part of the state because of the proximity to the moisture involved in the system off the coast.
However, the National Weather Service said there is still disagreement among computer models on the exact strength and position of the developing surface low that will bring the moisture to the area. If the low were to form closer to the coast and further south, it would increase the chances and amounts of precipitation in central North Carolina, the weather service said.
The weather service says the chance of measurable precipitation from the weather event in central North Carolina is less than 20 percent.
