CARY, N.C. — Deer can be a traffic hazard, but you would not expect to hit a deer when shopping in a gift store. That was the case in Cary, where two deer took a detour Monday afternoon.

Witnesses say a deer broke through a plate glass window at a Hallmark store at a shopping center lcoated at High House and Maynard roads.

"I'm a grandmother, so I said 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer,'" store manager Barbara Lipson said.

The Hallmark store was filled with customers and employees when the deer came charging through.

"We had all dropped to the floor. He ran on top of us, he ran over to the side. We yelled 'Open the door' and a customer opened the door and out he went," Lipson said.

Minutes earlier, another deer had invaded a store just a few doors away in the same shopping center.

"I would have thought I would hit one on the road before one would have hit my business," store owner Bill Ziegler said.

Ziegler spent the evening cleaning up glass from a shattered door.

"Since the Hallmark and us are the only stores selling Christmas, we figured the deer were from Santa so everything looked natural to them," Ziegler said. "How do you explain it?"

Jesse Russell was injured by flying glass from the window and another woman injured her leg, but both should be OK.

The Hallmark store suffered a significant amount of damage to its gifts and a display case.
