Wake Officials Hope To Nail Down Locations For Mobile Schools

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County schools are getting ready to take mobile classrooms to a new level. Now, officials need to find a place to put them.

The modular schools will come with hallways, bathrooms and even small cafeterias. The newest addition will be built on land purchased in Wendell. The other two could go in one of three spots: Wildwood Forest Elementary, East Millbrook Middle or Lynn Road Elementary. Officials are waiting to see what happens so they can start planning.

"I guess the immediate challenge is traffic," Lynn Road Elementary School Principal Sylvia Faulk said. "This is a high traffic area."

Lynn Road Elementary may have to share its space.

"I know the board is looking at several options and this is one of the options," Faulk said.

Wake County schools needs to find space for 5,000 to 6,000 students by next fall. Instead of just adding mobile classrooms, it will add mobile schools.

After 27 years of teaching, Pam Smith said she has never had to think about making room for a mobile school.

"I can't envision it yet. I don't know enough about it," she said. "My feeling is I don't want to lose our playground. We use all our available space here, so I'd hate to see it happen."

"We won't worry about this until we have the specifics and then we'll work with Wake County to get through the planning stage," Faulk said.

Lynn Road Elementary is not the No. 1 choice, but school officials know they are an option. The modular school is supposed to be temporary. The students and staff would feed into a new school that opens in the next few years.

Wake County schools are also planning to add 168 mobile classrooms to tackle growth for the 2005-2006 school year. Wake County schools already has 709 mobile classrooms. By comparison, Cumberland County has 178. Johnston County has between 120 and 130 mobile classrooms.
