Because of the rising water in the Lumber River and water problems in general, all Robeson County schools closed at 2 p.m. Some parents picked up their children while other students took buses back home. School officials said they did not want to take any chances.
"Things happen, so we just have to react and sometimes be as proactive as we can," said Raymond Cummings, transportation director of Robeson County schools.
"We've had flooding out here before," Robeson County resident Megan Cooper said. "It's never been like this."
Flooding issues were also felt in Cumberland County. Friday's scheduled football game between Jack Britt High School and South View High School had to be canceled because the field was saturated with water. They hope to reschedule the game for Saturday.
