I-40, I-85 Ramp Closures

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Rotating ramp closures strike again on Interstate 40 and Interstate 85 this weekend.

FRIDAY

The Department of Transportation temporarily will close the southbound Interstate 85 off-ramp and the northbound I-85 on-ramp at Hillandale Road in Durham, beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

The closure will be in place until late September. DOT officials said the closure is necessary to reconstruct the ramps for the new Hillandale Road Bridge as part of the I-85 widening project.

Also beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, the DOT temporarily will close the westbound I-40 on and off-ramps at N.C. 751 (Exit 274) in Durham County.

The ramps will remain closed for approximately 60 days.

Motorists traveling on I-85 South needing to take Hillandale Road can use the following detour:

  • Take Guess Road (exit 175) to Carver Street to Hillandale Road.
  • Take Cole Mill Road (exit 173) to Rose of Sharon Road to Carver Street to Hillandale Road.
  • Hillandale Road motorists needing to take I-85 North can use the following detour:

  • Take Hillandale Road to Carver Street to Rose of Sharon Road to Cole Mill Road to I-85 North.
  • Take Hillandale Road to Carver Street to Guess Road to I-85 North.
  • Motorists affected by the closure of the 751 exit ramps can use the following signed detours:

  • I-40 westbound traffic needing to exit at N.C. 751 will continue westbound to the N.C. 54 exit (Exit 273) and then take I-40 East back to N.C. 751.
  • N.C. 751 motorists needing to access I-40 West will take I-40 East to the Fayetteville Road Exit (Exit 276) and then access I-40 West.
  • The closures are necessary as part of the I-40 widening project. The NCDOT is widening I-40 from 4 to 6 lanes and installing concrete median barriers. The 10.6 mile section extends from the Orange County line to N.C. 147 (Durham Freeway).

The westbound I-40 on and off-ramps at Fayetteville Road (Exit 276), which were closed on July 29, will be re-opened Friday prior to the ramp closures at N.C. 751.
