Husband in Abduction Case Now Faces Rape Charges

SANFORD, N.C. — Police on Wednesday charged Raymond Massa with three counts of second-degree rape in connection with the alleged abduction of  his estranged wife last month.

Massa already was being held on a $750,000 bond on kidnapping and assault counts alleging he abducted Sherry Massa on Dec. 18.

Sherry Massa was reported missing after her two daughters found her car abandoned in a ditch along a rural Lee County road. Authorities said a window had been broken out, and the engine was running.

Investigators said Raymond Massa used a truck he stole from his cousin to run his wife's car off the road, then yanked her out of her car, hit her several times in the face and forced her to go with him to Carolina Beach.

They later returned to the Fayetteville area. Police said Sherry Massa was able to convince her husband to let her go., and he was later arrested.

No court date was set for the rape charges. Massa is due to return to court Jan. 17 on the assault charges.
