Sketch of man sought in Fayetteville rape released
Police on Monday released a sketch of a man sought in a sexual assault in Fayetteville two weeks ago.
Posted — UpdatedA 58-year-old woman was crossing the parking lot of the Department of Social Services office on Ramsey Street at about 5 a.m. on June 3 when a man approached her, asked for a cigarette and offered her a ride in his car, police said.
When the woman got in the car, the man pulled out a knife. She told police she tried to fight him off and run away, but he chased her down and raped her.
After the assault, the man got into his car, a newer model, four-door sedan that was burgundy or dark blue, and drove off, police said.
The man was described as black, about 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds. He had short hair, long but neatly trimmed sideburns and a goatee and was wearing a white tank top, light-colored jeans and a black bandanna.
Anyone who recognizes the man in the sketch or who has information about the case is asked to call detectives at 910-433-1352 or Crime Stoppers at 910-483-TIPS (8477).
Police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts said the department is examining crime trends and working closely with neighborhood watch groups, but he wouldn't comment on whether more officers would be placed on patrol.
