New Ferries To Help With Summer Travel Season At Beach

HATTERAS BEACH, N.C. — Many communities like Hatteras Village are still recovering from Hurricane Isabel, so they are looking forward to a flood of tourists for the summer. Now, there are two new ferries to help ease some of the gridlock for traffic.

The Croatoan and W. Stanford White can both carry more than 40 cars from place to place, 13 more than the old ferries. The new ferries are designed to alleviate congestion and long lines at peak times.

The ferries arrived before Hurricane Isabel hit the coast last year, but they were primarily used to shuttle emergency vehicles back and forth.

Officials said the new ferries are able to make eight trips a day as opposed to the old ones making six trips a day.
